Thanks to efforts by the Connected Community Committee, the Olds Institute is proud to offer quality community programming to the residents of Olds and the surrounding district through our state of the art technology located in the Olds College Bell e-Learning Centre. Check back often for a list of programs being offered.
TECHNOLOGY COURSES In the Fall of 2010, the Connected Community Committee will be offering the following courses at the Olds Library:
- Photoshop Elements 8
- The Olds Community Engagement site offers the opportunity to learn Photoshop in a non-threatening small classroom setting. Starting at the beginning registrants will learn everything they need to master the basics of the program and begin transferring their own digital photography into works of art they can be proud of. (The purchase of a textbook will be required for this course as well. They can be purchased through the library at a discounted rate. - Basic Web Design
- In a fast paced world where people are relying more and more on technology to communicate, businesses are feeling the push to have their product information, business information, and contact information online. Websites can be elaborate, professionally designed, or unique. This course at the Olds Community engagement site is designed for those that want to lay down some stepping stones and begin their first journey to establishing an online presence. Topics covered will be; free online tools, website hosting, professional design companies, design elements, and must haves of the online world. Fee: $50. Two days 6:00 – 9:00. November 23rd and 25th
- One-on-One Computer Instruction
- Here’s a chance for you to learn those skills you have always wanted to learn without the fears and hassles of a classroom. Our friendly staff and volunteers are there to give you their undivided attention for one full hour based on the topics listed below. Ask the questions you need answered! You must book at least a day in advance and talk to the instructor before attending the course. Topics available for instruction include:
Advanced Internet Searching (databases, more from Google, etc.), Online Shopping and Banking (security, ebay, paypal, etc.), Social Networking (facebook, twitter, etc.), Beginner Computing, MS Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Publisher), IPods, MP3 Players, eBook readers and other digital devices, Digital Cameras, Mac for Beginners. Fee: $25.00 per hour. Booking by appointment only, appointment times available may vary.
- Grandparents Staying Connected
- In today’s technological society children and grandchildren are leaning more toward online communication tools such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Email and Text Messaging to talk to family members, share photos, and let people know what is going on. At the Olds Community Engagement site this two session course will offer you some insight into how to use these tools and move you toward being connected with family and loved ones again. Fee: $30.00. Two Days 1:00 – 3:00. November 22nd and 23rd
- Computing for Seniors
- Discussing the world of computers you will learn the basics of managing the computer. Learn how to use Windows, basic word processing, and basic internet use. This three day course is specifically designed for those that didn’t grow up with some basic knowledge of computers. (*Optional* take home book. LAW SERIES This series of courses is brought to you through Video Conference from the Public Legal Education Program from Lethbridge College. With a wide variety of topics to choose from, each course is designed to give anyone the ability to deal with legal situations with knowledge up front. - Enduring Power of Attorney, Personal Directive, Will: A Legal Toolkit
- Planning for disability or death is never pleasant. However, it is an important part of identifying what you want done when something like this happens to you and helping those around you carry out your wishes. An enduring power of attorney, a personal directive, and a will are basic to building your plan. In this presentation, you'll learn about these basic legal tools and what's involved in acquiring them.

- Being An Executor - Legal Rights and
Responsibilities
- This presentation will provide an overview of the legal rights and responsibilities of an executor (also known as a personal representative) as that person: Gathers in the estate assets, pays the debts, distributes to beneficiaries, generally administers the estate.

- Law and Living Together
- What are the legal rights and responsibilities of unmarried people living together as spouses and how do they differ from those of married people? What is a cohabitation agreement and how important is it for people in such relationships to have one? What is an adult interdependent partner and what is the significance of becoming one? This presentation provides an opportunity to look at questions like these. The topics for discussion include care and support of children, inheritance, and property.
